USED FLIGHT HARDWARE:

PURPOSE:

Study the effect of microgravity on the microtubule cytoskeleton of individual walled plant cells (plant cells in suspension culture, Nicotiana tabaccum Bright Yellow 2 cells).

OBJECTIVES:

  • Determine the effect of microgravity on ordering of microtubules in plant cells during growth and cell division and on the ability of microtubules to polymerise.
  • Characterize the role gravity plays in self organization of microtubules in a cellular system.
EXPERIMENT RESULTS:

Biology containers (8) returned to the ground.

EXPECTED RESULTS:

Further study of new kinds of plants for possible cultivation in space.

 

The experiment aims to determine if single plant cells with an intact cell wall develop normally in microgravity.
For the above purpose, it is aimed to compare the microtubule cytoskeleton of plant cells exposed to g for a shorter period with the microtubule cytoskeleton of plant cells, which have been exposed to microgravity for a longer period.
