'Tourist mission of Soyuz MS-20 complete

December 20, 2021

This morning, December 20, 2021, the descent vehicle of the crew transportation Soyuz MS-20, which had undocked three hours earlier from the International Space Station, landed at its designated landing site in Kazakhstan. The tourist crew consisting of Roscosmos cosmonaut Alexander Misurkin and spaceflight participants Yusaku Maezawa and Yozo Hirano has returned to Earth.

All the de-orbiting and landing operations went normally, the crew feels well. The spacecraft separated from the Russian Segment of the station at 02:50:30 Moscow Time. Its propulsion system fired nominally at 05:18:56 Moscow Time to perform a retroburn and start de-orbiting. Soon after that the Soyuz MS split into three modules and the crew of three seated in the decent vehicle experienced normal g-loads of about 4g.

Post-flight rehabilitation

In order to complete the program of post-flight science experiments and rehabilitation, it is planned that this evening Alexander Misurkin, Yusaku Maezawa and Yozo Hirano will arrive at the Center for Cosmonaut (Astronaut) Prelaunch Training and Post-flight Rehabilitation in the Star City (Moscow region). The crew rehabilitation will take 14 to 21 days, depending on the health of the cosmonaut and spaceflight participants. During that time cosmonauts restore their normal physical shape, under medical supervision they go to the swimming pool, hike and gradually increase the loads on their muscles.

Rehabilitation period does not rule out participation of cosmonauts in experiments directly linked with their professional activities. It is planned that as early as December 21, Alexander Misurkin will continue his participation in medical experiment LAZMA, which had began even before the flight at the Gagarin Cosmonaut Training Center and then continued during his orbital mission. And it has now becom a tradition to conduct the experiment Sozvezdiye LM, which is primarily aimed at studying human performance in deep space exploration missions when working on he d\surfaces of the Moon and Mars.

The path to space

It should be reminded that after a long hiatus the State Corporation Roscosmos sent to the International Space Station two space tourists the Japanese billionaire Yusaku Maezawa and his assistant Yozo Hirano. The commander of the manned spacecraft Soyuz MS-20, as well as of the ISS Visiting Crew 20 was Hero of Russia, Roscosmos cosmonaut Alexander Misurkin.

The launch vehicle Soyuz-2.1a carrying Soyuz MS-20 was launched from Site 31 (Vostok) of the Baikonur Cosmodrome on December 8 at 10:38 Moscow Time. The manned spacecraft flew to the ISS using the four-orbit rendezvous profile, and the docking was performed in automatic mode.

Completed during the 11-day stay of the crew onboard the International Space Station were 9 experiments under the Russian science program. Three experiments have been conducted in the field of Space Biology and Physiology: Bioplenka, Mikrovir and Refleks, and four experiments were conducted in the field of Advanced Space Technology Development: Vizir, Stsenarii, Uragan and Ekon-M, and one experiment in each of the fields of Earth Studies from Space and Cosmic-ray Physiscs: Terminator and UF-atmosfera, respectively.

The space tourists also took part in the science program of the station. In particular, they took part in medical experiment LAZMA aimed at studying microcirculation of blood under microgravity. The results of the study will be of help in developing future prophylactic drugs. Improving the existing prophylactic measures will be especially important for advanced deep-space exploration. Eliminating unpleasant symptoms associated with the disorders of blood circulation will enable the crew to avoid discomfort and maintain high capacity for work onboard the station. Thanks to the Japanese tourists, the opportunity presented itself to carry out such a project onboard the ISS for the first time.

Spaceflight participants

Maezawa is one of the wealthiest people in Japan. Primarily, he became known as the founder of the online clothing shop Zozotown. Besides this, he is an art collector who established the Contemporary Art Foundation.

Yozo Hirano joined the ZOZO company after graduating from the university as photogroup casting director. Currently he is a producer at the SPACETODAY company. Onboard the ISS Yozo Hirano is responsible for press coverage of the Yusaku Maezawas mission.
