RSC Energia is 75!

August 26, 2021

Today, August 26, marks the 75th anniversary of S.P. Korolev Rocket and Space Corporation Energia!

Considered as the date of establishment of one of the most powerful companies in our countrys space industry is August 26, 1946, when, by order of the Minister of Armaments D.F.Ustinov, Department No.3 for designing long-range missiles was set up within the Special Design Bureau NII-88. Appointed as the chief designer of the department with the staff of 130 people was Sergei Pavlovich Korolev. It was that department that in 1951 was reorganized into OKB-1 now known as RSC Energia, which since 1991 is named after the Chief Designer S.P.Korolev.

The 75 years of history of RSC Energia is the history of space exploration, the history of development of our countrys rocket and space technology, which made our country the world leader in space. It was here that the first ballistic missiles R-1, R-2, R-5, R-11 and the legendary seventh model rocket R-7 were developed, the first artificial Earth satellites, the Vostok spacecraft which carried the first man into space the cosmonaut Yuri Alexeevich Gagarin, the first unmanned spacecraft to reach the Moon, Venus and Mars were designed, built and launched into space. The team of Energia built the worlds first manned orbital stations Salyut and Mir, design bureaus and workshops of the company created all the versions of the crew transportation spacecraft Soyuz and unmanned logistics spacecraft Progress, the reusable Buran orbiter within the multi-purpose space transportation system Energia-Buran. Born along with the new spacecraft, vehicle and modules were state-of-the-art advanced technologies and materials applicable to all the branches of the national economy, and whole new areas of scientific inquiry.

Today, the Corporation remains the prime enterprise in the field of manned exploration of space. 12-thousand strong workforce of Energia is the primary developer of Russian modules for the International Space Station, supporting their launches and efficient operation in orbit. The Corporation is working on development of the new-generation crew transportation spacecraft, and is reviewing options for constructing a new Russian Orbital Service Station (ROSS).

All the outstanding achievements of Energia would have been impossible without people capable of solving seemingly impossible problems! Working at the Corporation over the years were academicians S.P. Korolev, V.P. Glushko, V.P. Mishin, B.V. Raushenbakh, B.E. Chertok, Yu.P. Semenov, V.P. Legostaev, E.A. Mikrin, V.P. Savinykh and corresponding members of the Academy of Sciences K.D. Bushuev, V.S. Syromyatnikov, V.A. Lopota, V.A. Soloviev (the current General Designer of RSC Energia). 25 employees of the company were awarded the title of the Hero of Socialist Labor (S.P. Korolev and V.P. Glushko were awarded twice), more than 200 employees are winners of Lenin and State prizes and the prize of RF Government, more than 3 700 employees were awarded state decorations. Working today in the various branches of the company are 19 doctors of science and 132 candidates of science, seven people hold the title of professor and there are 43 postgraduates. The staff of Energia includes 12 cosmonauts (over the years it included the total of 40 cosmonauts).

Three quarters of a century is a long time by the standards of a human life, but it is almost nothing by the standards of space, which guides the activities of Energia.
