Ground tests of MLM Nauka

May 11, 2021

Scheduled operations of the final phase of Factory Check Tests (FCT) on the Multipurpose Laboratory Module (MLM) Nauka of the Russian Segment of the International Space Station (ISS) continue at the Baikonur launch site under the program of ground pre-launch processing at the processing facility of Area 254.

In accordance with the work timetable, the processing facility begins a cycle of pneumatics and vacuum tests on the Nauka module, intended to verify compliance with stringent requirements for pressure integrity of large compartments and onboard systems under ground conditions. MLM was pre-processed, filled with helium/air gas mixture and placed into the vacuum chamber VK-17523MR at the processing facility of Area 254. The module pneumatics and vacuum tests will take a month during which the pressure integrity of the hull, hatches and docking assemblies will be checked along with the functioning of pneumatic and hydraulic systems and external hydraulic loops. Scheduled after that are installation of the radiator panels and filling of the thermal control system circuits, as well as the final installation of the European robotic arm ERA. After conducting the final check tests, the extensive program of FCT tests at the launch site will be completed with the official hardware acceptance procedure of the Nauka module by the customer, RSC Energia.

The work at the processing facility will be performed by RSC Energia and SC Yuzhny specialists within the framework of the standard vehicle processing flow, which is expected to take 54 days. Scheduled for this period are installation of solar array panels, stowage of deliverable cargos and weight check of the module, assembly of the ascent unit, loading the module tanks with propellant components, and final assembly of the integrated launch vehicle.

The Multipurpose Laboratory Module Nauka is a research module for the Russian Segment of the International Space Station developed by S.P.Korolev RSC Energia in cooperation with the Khrunichev State Research and Production Space Center in order to expand the functionality of the Russian Segment of the ISS.
