RSC Energia: the tenth Space Lesson

Within the framework of the All-Russian Educational Project the tenth Space lesson was given. By tradition the lesson was given on several sites at once uniting schoolchildren from Korolev, Tomsk and Novosibirsk, as well as pupils of Sochi Educational Center Sirius in live video tape recording mode. The subject of the lesson was space experiments.

The science city was represented by RSC Energia aerospace class schoolchildren (Lyceum No. 5, Korolev), pupils of Quantorium (Korolev) and winners of project Lessons of the Present.

Authoritative expects: Adviser to the Director General of RSC Energia, Honored Designer of the Russian Federation A.G. Chernyavsky, Head of the Atmospheric Optical Sounding Group of the Institute of Atmospheric Optics, Siberian Department of RAS, Yu.S. Balin, pilot-cosmonaut, Hero of Russia A.F. Poleschuk were invited to give this Space Lesson.
The pupils spoke about their research. The guys from Novosibirsk shared a story about the creation of an automatic lunar rover with optical sensors and a map of the area and the schoolchildren from Tomsk described the possibilities of using laser technologies when studying the atmosphere properties. Participants of project Lessons of the Present dedicated their speech to remote sensing of the Earth.

The Tomsk scientists from the Institute of Strength Physics and Materials Science showed the guys a story about the so-called friction stir welding technology (cold welding). The pupils of Educational Center Sirius who tested the specimens on the vibration table checked the produced welds for strength.

During the lesson a direct communication session with the Russian Segment of the ISS was held. The participants of the lesson could ask their questions to pilot-cosmonaut Oleg Kononenko. Schoolchildren were interested in various aspects of orbital space experiments: how do cosmonauts train on Earth for scientific work in space? What is the difference between the ground experiments and those which are carried out in a space laboratory? How does weightlessness affect the human cognitive abilities? The commander of the ISS-58 spoke in detail about his research activity, in particular, about the Sphere experiment (Zero Robotics).

In conclusion A.G. Chernyavsky called to teachers and schoolchildren to apply for participation in experiments onboard the ISS, which the Russian crew will conduct together with the students, and also set homework for the next lesson the subject of which the manned cosmonautics will be.

At the end of the broadcast Alexandr Fedorovich Poleschuk presented memorable certificates and books as a gift to the quests of the Korolev Quantorium – the winners of project Lessons of the Present.

The live broadcast of the Space Lesson was carried on website, YouTube – channel of TSRBC Tomsk, in official groups VKontakte and Facebook.
