The first meeting in orbit

January 16, 2019

Fifty years ago, on January 16, 1969, two manned spacecraft Soyuz-4 and Soyuz-5 met over the Earth. For the first time in the world after docking in a near-earth orbit a Soviet Space Station was put into operation with a crew of four cosmonauts: Vladimir Shatalov, Boris Volynov, Alexey Eliseev and Evgeny Khrunov.

The spacecraft had no pressurized transfer compartment, therefore, Khrunov and Eliseev donned suits, egressed into space and transferred to Soyuz-4 spacecraft. This transition was an element of training for the intended flight to the Moon. Khrunov and Eliseev returned to the Earth already in Soyuz-4 together with its commander Shatalov. About a day later, Soyuz-5 piloted by Boris Volynov landed too.
