A Smart Shelf appeared on the ISS

January 16, 2019

Cosmonaut Oleg Kononenko installed a "smart shelf" on board the ISS, which will facilitate the crew operations. Designed at RSC Energia the "shelf" is a device capable of reading RFID tags which will be attached to the equipment and different objects arriving to the station.

The photograph shows that it looks like a cabinet with small doors, behind which 240 palm-sized RFID-tagged plastic cards are stored. Each card secures certain medicines, as well as thermometers, plasters and other small items.

Now, typing a drug name on the tablet screen, the cosmonaut will immediately see where it is located, as well as more information on the use, doses, and expiry date.

A great many things arrive on each cargo vehicle, a total amount of equipment on the Russian Segment comes up to 7 thousand items. Until recently, all items on the station were inventoried using barcodes, which cosmonauts shall manually read and enter the cargo stowage locations on the on-board computers.
