RSC Energia runs a simulation of a Federatsiya spacecraft mission

December 7, 2018

Today, December 7, RSC Energia, at its ergonomics development facility, runs an integrated experiment to simulate activities of the crew of the advanced Crew Transportation Spacecraft (CTS) Federatsiya during a manned mission. The testers are to try out for the first time a whole sequence of flight operations in the course of one timeline – to simulate the pre-launch processing of the spacecraft, its orbital insertion, rendezvous and docking with the International Space Station (ISS).

The test team includes Energia specialists: systems engineers, designers, cosmonaut testers from the Spaceflight Center of the Corporation, as well as representatives from the Gagarin Cosmonaut Training Center and Institute for Biomedical Problems (IBMP) of the Russian Academy of Sciences.

– Our task is to fine-tune the procedure and key algorithms of crew activities. We plan to further develop this procedure for conducting experiments by a whole team of specialists. Here, everything is real, except zero-gravity. But its absence actually makes the work of the crew more difficult – one has to be more stringent in assessing ergonomics of the command module, – said Mark Serov, deputy head of Spaceflight Center of Energia.

The series of experiments to evaluate man-machine interface of CTS Federatsiya will run till the end of this year. The obtained data will become the basis for developing operational documentation for conducting flight tests of the new spacecraft.
