RT: Amazing Experience: How Russian Space Captivated US Students

April 17, 2018

Russian and US schoolchildren and students took part in the first ever joint Space Lesson organized by RT in cooperation with RSC Energia. The students had a chance to talk with cosmonauts onboard the ISS and among themselves, as well as to appreciate panoramic videos of the RT project Space 360. In spite of the crisis in the relations between the two countries and its status as foreign agent, the TV channel did not come up against any obstacles while organizing the lesson, and the local media presented it in a positive light. Many US schools have already filed applications to take part in the next year’s communications session. How space brought Russia and US together – the RT material.

Russian-US relationships are going through a difficult period. Washington and Moscow compare the current situation to the cold war, and the US president Donald Trump has warned Russia about the upcoming rocket strike against Syria.

This notwithstanding, April 10 saw one more Space Lesson, by this time the seventh, taking part in which were Russian high-school students from the aerospace class of the Lycee under the aegis of Tomsk Polytechnic University, pupils from the educational center ‘Sirius’ for gifted children in Sochi and schoolchildren from aerospace gymnasium in Korolev. Sitting together with them at the same virtual school desk were pupils from a school in Bozeman, Monatana, and students of the University of South Carolina. The subject of the Lesson was ‘Manned Spaceflight. The Earth in the Porthole.

RT in cooperation with Astronomers Without Borders and RSC Energia set up for the students a communications session with Russian cosmonauts Anton Shkaplerov and Oleg Artemiev, who are now onboard the International Space Station. Russian and US students got a chance to ask their questions about life in orbit.

In addition to this, the students watched panoramic videos of the special RT project ‘Space 360’.

“This is totally cool! It’s an amazing experience when you see it with your own eyes in virtual reality. I’d like to go into space. I’ve always wanted to become an astronaut!” — said one of the US pupils.

“Emotions of children after they have talked with the ISS crew and watched panoramic videos from RT speak for themselves. I hope that other US schools will also want to take part in the project. This is one more example of what US and Russia can achieve working together in space’, — commented on the live link-up the manger of RT360 Edward Chizhikov.

In spite of its status of a foreign agent, RT did not encounter any obstacles when organizing the Space Lesson. Moreover, the principal of the school in Montana himself invited the TV channel, while members of staff of local educational establishments helped to get the expensive equipment for the project.

Even US media, which usually take a negative attitude towards RT and Russia as a whole, covered this event in a positive light. News items appeared on TV channels ABC Fox Montana and 7KBZK.

“It was interesting to learn what they (the Russian students — RT) do, what their classroom looks like, what experiments do they do”, — admitted one of the US students.

“The International Space Station is one of those few places where a fruitful international cooperation is kept alive. I’m glad that we can show our work in space and that the partnership between the Americans and Russians is not only possible, but is also gladly welcomed”, — said a Russian cosmonaut Andrei Borisenko.

“I’m glad that the geography of this project is expanding. For the first time today taking part with us in the Space Lesson are students and schoolchildren from the USA. Friends, love space! Reach for space! And try learning, finding out and inventing as many things as possible! We, on our part, are going to do our best to help you, to support the most interesting educational programs, to give you an opportunity to meet, to communicate and to compete. And remember, that "Together we are better!" –said the general director of RSC Energia Vladimir Solntsev.
