RSC Energia: Conceptual design for Soyuz-5 launch vehicle approved

April 11, 2018

A Roscosmos committee has approved RSC Energias conceptual design for the Medium Launch Vehicle System intended for flight developmental testing of key elements of the Super-Heavy Space Launch Vehicle System. The acceptance report and committees statement have been handed over to Energia.

The documents note that the Soyuz-5 design has been studied to an adequate level of detail and in accordance with the requirements of the statement of work under the government contract.

The list of subcontractors includes enterprises of the State Corporation Roscosmos.

Currently under way is the next stage in the development of the rocket system, the development of the working design documentation. Soyuz-5 is scheduled for completion in 2021. Conducting flight tests of the new Russian launch vehicle is scheduled for 2022 from the Baikonur launch site.

The new launch vehicle can be used to put the crew transportation spacecraft Federatsiya into low Earth orbit. The key elements and technologies of the newly developed medium launch vehicle Soyuz-5 will be used in the design of the Super-Heavy Space Launch Vehicle (SH SLV) which is supposed to support the implementation of advanced space projects, first and foremost among which is the Lunar program. A decree by the President of the Russian Federation signed in February 2018 made Energia Corporation the prime developer of the SH SLV.

RSC Energia  is the leader in the rocket and space industry, and the prime contractor for manned space systems. The Corporation conducts work on the development of unmanned space and rocket systems (launch vehicles and orbital transfer vehicles), and high-technology systems for various non-space applications. Since August 2014, the Corporation is headed by Vladimir Solntsev.

ROSCOSMOS  is a State Corporation established in August of 2015 in order to conduct a comprehensive reform of the rocket and space industry in Russia. State Corporation Roscosmos assures implementation of the Government policies in the field of space activities and provides for them a legal and regulatory framework, as well as places orders for the development, production and delivery of space hardware and space infrastructure facilities. The functions of the State Corporation also include development of international cooperation in space, and creating conditions for using results of space activities in social and economic development of Russia.
