RSC Energia to simulate a working day of the SPM crew

In late March RSC Energia is to run a test to simulate the intravehicular activities of the crew in the ergonomic mockup of the Science and Power Module (SPM).

The notional ‘mission plan’ for a work day of the cosmonauts, the list of experimental equipment and mockups in this experiment are selected in such a way as to assess the interactions between the crew, the hardware, the functional zones of the module.

During the design and design documentation development phase, the engineers, in close cooperation with human-engineering specialists and cosmonauts were developing a comfortable module with convenient workstations and a well thought-out interior of the habitation compartment. For this purpose the Corporation built a full-scale ergonomic mockup of the SPM.

The experiment simulates a work day of a crew of three. Simulated in the course of work of the notional crew will be the manual mode of docking with a logistics vehicle, work with the scientific equipment, maintenance and repair activities. For which purpose the internal volume of the module will be filled with mockups and the actual onboard equipment. The crew is supposed to work in accordance with the mission plan while interacting with a notional MCC.

“Using the results of several full-scale experiments, including those that involve specialists from the Institute for Biomedical Problems and the Cosmonaut Training Center, we will verify to what extent the ergonomics of the module meets the specified requirements. Subsequently, this process is to be used on this mockup to perform developmental testing of onboard instructions manuals and procedures for SPM, documentation for the module integration into the ISS Russian Segment, and, in the long run, – developmental testing of the use of SPM as a commercial module, and, possibly, also as a constituent part of a circumlunar station or a lunar base”, - said Mark Serov, the head of the flight testing department of RSC Energia.

During the next stage of the SPM development, the human engineering assessment will be performed on a flight model.

Modules MLM, NM and SPM are to become a part of the International Space Station and complete the assembly of the Russian Segment of the ISS. Currently, static tests of the module are drawing to a close, a mockup is being constructed for dynamic tests, and the flight model is being outfitted.
