RSC Energia develops partnerships in the field of science and education

February 9, 2018

On February 9 in Tomsk an agreement was signed to cooperate in development of the Space Lesson Initiative, as well as an agreement on scientific and engineering cooperation between RSC Energia and Tomsk Province Administration.

The agreement to cooperate on the Space Lesson Initiative deals with further development of this educational project. It was initiated by RSC Energia, administration of the Tomsk province, Institute for Physics of Strength and Materials Science of the Siberian Division of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Tomsk State Pedagogical University, an affiliate of the All-Russia State Television and Radio Broadcasting Company - STVRC Tomsk and the Educational Center for Gifted Children ‘Sirius’ (Sochi). The agreement calls for close cooperation aimed at supporting gifted children, popularization of achievements of the Russian space science and space industry, research and engineering activities among students.

Space Lessons is a one-of-a-kind educational project, within the framework of which schoolchildren submit their science projects to specialists in space industry and talk in real time with cosmonauts onboard the ISS. In the long run, such lessons may become a part of curricula all over Russia.

The agreement on scientific and engineering cooperation between the Corporation and the Tomsk Province is aimed at strengthening the ties with the Tomsk scientific and educational community – expanding the scope of joint projects in space science, engineering and innovative technologies, development of cooperation in manufacturing, science and technology, conducting joint career-guidance activities. The agreement was signed by the General Director of the Corporation Vladimir Solntsev and the Governor Sergei Zhvachkin.

Prior to signing the document Vladimir Solntsev and Sergei Zhvachkin visited the Institute for Physics of Strength and Materials Science of the Siberian Division of the Russian Academy of Sciences, where the visitors were shown some breakthrough technologies for space: Friction stir welding, which can be used for manufacturing structures of the new-generation space hardware, a prototype 3D printer slated for delivery to the International Space Station in 2019, and other projects.

- Tomsk province is one of those few regions where the authorities, the science and the business communities are on the same team. Here we can observe this rare phenomenon when the governor personally gets down to brass tacks of the project. This symbiosis results in new projects, new production culture and new intellectual constellation of people, - pointed out the General Director of RSC Energia Vladimir Solntsev.

It will be recalled that the strategic partnership with the Tomsk Polytechnic University (TPU), the Institute for Physics of Strength and Materials Science and the Administration of the Tomsk Province goes back several years now: joint scientific centers have been opened which are used as a base for development of advanced technologies, taking into account the need to replace foreign imports with Russian-made products, the training of highly-skilled specialists sponsored by prospective employers is under way.
