ROSCOSMOS. Completion of flight tests of the Progress MS CTV

August 8, 2017

The flight tests of the Progress MS modernized cargo transport vehicle (CTV) have been successfully completed. The new series vehicle tests were carried out during the flights of the Progress MS and Progress MS-02 CTV and also during the flight of the Progress MS-03 CTV as the passed tests. The flight test program has been fulfilled in full scope. According to the results of the test program in early August 2017, an appropriate Order is signed.

On July 1, 2016 within the framework of the flight tests the upgraded remote control system for spacecraft (teleoperation control mode) was successfully tested in the Progress MS CTV. CTV was removed from docking compartment Pirs (DC-1) of the ISS for a range of about 200 m for comprehensive check of teleoperation control mode operation. ROSCOSMOS cosmonauts Aleksei OVCHININ and Oleg SKRIPOCHKA who were onboard the ISS took over control of the cargo vehicle. The final testing phase was the return of the Progress-MS vehicle to the station as its part.

Using the Progress MS-02 CTV being part of the International Space Station from April 2 to October 14, 2016 four scheduled corrections of the ISS orbit were made. The flight tests of the Progress MS-03 CTV were successfully completed on January 31, 2017.

The Progress MS cargo transport vehicle was developed by S.P. Korolev Rocket & Space Public Corporation Energia and is the result of a profound upgrade of the Progress M vehicle. The vehicle has the satellite navigation system, a new command and telemetry system capable of operating in the control loop via multifunctional space relay system Luch, modified onboard radio rendezvous system Kurs-NA and digital control units of berthing and orientation of the transport vehicle.
