RSC Energia: yet another milestone reached in the work on Nauka module for the ISS

June 20, 2016

RSC Energia specialists have successfully completed the manufacturing and developmental testing of the additional equipment to be installed in the Multipurpose Laboratory Module (MLM) Nauka for the International Space Station (ISS).

RSC Energia President Vladimir Solntsev: The work to manufacture additional equipment for MLM has been completed on schedule. We are completing documentation development and proceeding with the installation of large pieces of equipment on the outside of the module. The completion of this milestone will make it possible to proceed with the final assembly and testing of MLM for subsequent shipping off to the processing facility.

The launch of MLM Nauka with improved operating specifications is scheduled for December 2017.

MLM is a multifunctional laboratory module Nauka which is supposed to provide for further development of the ISS Russian Segment and support scientific research. MLM Nauka is, in some respects, superior to the European Columbus and Japanese Kibo modules. The module design includes standardized workstations hardware for installation and connection of scientific equipment both inside and outside the space station, which makes it possible to adapt the module to any task. The high level of MLM automation allows reducing the number of costly spacewalks many of the outboard operations will become possible to perform without leaving the station. In addition to supporting scientific research, Nauka module will provide the ISS with oxygen, regenerate water from urine and control the station roll attitude.
