RSC Energia is developing a space electric power wireless transmission system

RSC Energia specialists have proceeded to a ground development testing of electric power transmission from one object to another using infrared laser radiation.

Leading laboratories of our country have joined the project, and today we already have photovoltaic receivers-converters with an efficiency of about 60 percent. For testing the beam alignment system a line of 1.5 km long between the transmitter and receiver was prepared at the company premises. The system operates successfully in the experimental mode, said the head of department for power systems of new-generation space vehicles of RSC Energia, Vyacheslav Tugaenko.

By estimates of the Corporation specialists, the efficiency of the entire line can reach 10-20 percent, and with the use of the recent advances in laser technology and optoelectronics there are all capabilities to increase it up to 30 percent.

The result of the initial research is that we understood that we could carry out such an experiment in space. The space experiment is planned to transfer energy from the ISS to TCV Progress, which will be moved away from the station at a distance of one or two kilometers, says V.Tugaenko.

According to him, in perspective the development of powerful laser systems will make it possible to transfer power from the spacecraft with rather powerful power plants to other spacecraft equipped with special receivers- converters. This will open up new possibilities in space exploration.

Such developments may also find application in the areas which require the use of autonomous robotic systems. Primarily, this concerns the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Ministry of Emergency Situations, which on a regular basis employ robots in disaster clean-up operations, scanning objects for explosives and other operations that may be too hazardous for human participation. The laser power supply technologies permit to significantly increase the sustainability of remotely operated devices and, thereby improve their effectiveness many times.
