Gun TР-82 has become the first exhibit at the Armory Chamber pertaining to the history of space exploration

August 12, 2015

Today, on August 12, special small arms for cosmonauts - gun TP-82 - were donated to the State Historical and Cultural Memorial Estate "the Moscow Kremlin" at RSC Energia.

The ceremony was attended by the President of the Corporation, Vladimir Solntsev, flight cosmonaut, twice Hero of the Soviet Union Alexei Leonov, and director of the museum, daughter of the first cosmonaut Yelena Gagarina, as well as veterans of the space industry and young specialists of the company.

The hunting three-barreled non-automatic gun TP-82 was designed for self-defense and survival of cosmonauts landed outside the specified area. The initiator and one of the participants in its development was a famous cosmonaut Alexei Leonov. In 1982, TP-82 was officially accepted to support the Soviet space missions within a special complex SONAZ (small-arms of the personal survival kit). The production of the gun was stopped in 1987, but for many years TP-82 formed part of complex SONAZ for crew commanders, and was used during expeditions to the ISS.

"Only a few guns were produced. It's a valuable weapon, also due to its rarity. This rare specimen is really unique, and for several reasons. Firstly, it is a working model, not a dummy. Secondly, it has been to the ISS several times. I am proud to pass this gun to Elena Yurievna Gagarina, and I am sure that among the rich collection of the main museum of the country, it will occupy rightful place and will attract the attention of millions of visitors" - pointed out Vladimir Solntsev in his speech.

According to Elena Gagarina, TP-82 will be the first exhibit of the museum "The Moscow Kremlin" relating to the history of space exploration.

"Such collection of weapons which is exhibited in our Armory Chamber does not exist in any other museums in the world. Recently, we received a complete set of the legendary Kalashnikov gun (AK), and now visitors will have another reason to be proud of our country!" - emphasized E.Gagarina.

The copy donated to the museum has a serial number 22. It was launched into orbit several times: in 2009 and 2010. The authenticity of the weapon is confirmed by a special certificate.

Alexei Leonov described the circumstances of landing of Voskhod-2 spacecraft, which impelled him to think about development of a reliable gun for the crewmembers, by which a crewmember could protect his life under wildlife conditions. Makarov gun (PM) used before proved useless both for defense against large animals and hunting.

TP-82 was designed so that it could be reloaded by one hand, could pepper at short distance from two smooth bores and at long distance from a rifled bore. To increase the target accuracy a buttstock-machete was provided for. In addition, the new weapon was an excellent signal system: according to Leonov, a shot from TP-82 with a light cartridge was visible at a distance of hundred kilometers.

Alexey Arkhipovich together with Nikolai Ivanovich Korovyakov, head of design bureau for advanced developments of Tula Ordnance Factory was personally involved in development of the gun.
