Cargo vehicle Progress M-25M Submerged in the Pacific Ocean

April 27, 2015

Transport cargo vehicle (TCV) Progress M-25M made at RSC Energia ceased autonomous flight on Sunday and was submerged in unnavigable area of the Pacific Ocean.

On April 25, 2015 TCV Progress M-25M was undocked nominally from the International Space Station (ISS). At 9 hours 41 minutes Moscow Time, physical separation of the cargo vehicle from the ISS Pirs docking port took place. After that the cargo vehicle had been in autonomous flight for more than one day.

On April 26, at 15 hours 08 minutes the Progress braking engine generated deorbit burn. The Propulsion system had operated 189 seconds and imparted deorbit burn of 100.9 m/s to the transport cargo vehicle. At about 16 hours: 00 minutes, the cargo vehicle structural elements which had not burnt up on reentry reached the Pacific Ocean surface.

On October 29, 2014 TCV Progress M-25M was launched from Baikonur Cosmodrome by Soyuz-2.1a launch vehicle. It was for the first time that this launch vehicle was used to inject transport cargo vehicle into orbit. Before that cargo vehicles had been launched into orbit by Soyuz-U launch vehicles.

The cargo vehicle delivered to the station the cargoes required for its operation with a total weight of 2351 kg, including propellant components, water, compressed oxygen food products, scientific experiments hardware and crew members parcels.

OAO RSC Energia is the leading rocket-space industry enterprise, the head organization responsible for manned space systems. It is concerned with building automatic space and rocket systems (launch vehicles and orbit-to-orbit transportation systems), high-tech systems intended for different purposes and used in areas other than space. Since August 2014 the Corporation is headed by V.L. Solntsev.
