Biotechnological research on ISS Russian Segment

KAP 03 Experiment


KAP 03 experiment forms part of the research program performed by South Korean astronaut Yi So Yeon under KAP Project on the ISS RS. The research program is preparation and implemented on order by the South Korea Aerospace Research Institute (KARI).



Objective:

Investigation of metabolism processes in living organisms in microgravity.

Task:

Cultivation of plant, animal and human cells on the ISS RS.

Science Hardware Used :

Unit HOLDER MBR Bioreactor BIOTRON MBR
  • Bioreactor BIOTRON MBR;

Bioreactor BIOTRON MBR is designed as a monoblock. The monoblock is a case made of an aluminum alloy accommodating a memory card and three units:

  • Unit HOLDER MBR;

Unit HOLDER MBR contains six cartridges (minibioreactors) filled with biological cultures being investigated. Microbioreactors are filled with culture cell samples of three types: plant, animal and human cells.

  • Main power and control block (PCB);

PCB controls a cell cultivation process and power supply from the ISS RS.

  • Battery pack.

Battery pack includes 10 storage batteries which provides a self-contained power supply for the experimental hardware in transit to the ISS RS.

Flight Equipment Used:

  • Digital Camera Nikon D2X;
  • Camcorder Sony HVR-Z1J.

Experiment Results:

Culture cells (plant, animal and human cells) cultivated in microgravity and memory card, as well as accompanying photo and video information on a flash card and video tape.
