Biotechnological research on ISS Russian Segment
MIS Experiment
Experiment MIS is included in the program of research activities to be performed by Malaysian angkasawan Sheikh Muszaphar Shukor Al Masrie onboard
the ISS Russian Segment in the framework of ANGKASA MSM Project. The experiment is
performed under the Malaysian National Program.
Objectives:
Investigate the effects of spaceflight on growth kinetics and mutation processes in bacterial cells, and effects on minimum inhibiting
medicine concentration for various kinds of bacteria.
Tasks:
Investigate the effect of microgravity and space radiation on E.Cloacae and Acinetobacter baumanii
cells (static gram-negative bacillus).
Science Hardware Used :
Each FPA set has six FPA biocontainers. FPA compartments (chambers)
are filled with bacteria suspension, medium and fixative. Chamber A is
filled with microbe culture (E. Cloacae and Acinetobacter
baumanii), chamber B is filled with medium (Brucella broth or
Mueller-Hinton broth), and chamber C contains fixative (RNA-Later).
- HOBO temperature data recorder
HOBO is an autonomous temperature recorder, powered by a small internal battery and storing data in non-volatile memory.
- KUBIK AMBER Incubator Will be used to perform the experiment and store experiment samples until their return to the ground.
Crew Support Equipment:
- Digital camera Nikon D2X;
- Laptop A31P.
Experiment Results:
Exposed bacterial cell cultures and accompanying photo information on a flash card.
