Human Life Research on ISS Russian Segment

KAP 02 Experiment

KAP 02 experiment forms part of the research program performed by South Korean astronaut Yi So Yeon under KAP Project on the ISS RS. The research program is preparation and implemented on order by the South Korea Aerospace Research Institute (KARI).

Objective:

Study of microgravity effects on genes responding to gravity and responsible for ageing of a fruit-fly Drosophila melanogaster.

Task:

Exposure of a kit with fruit-flies Drosophila melanogaster on the ISS RS.

Science Hardware Used:

  • Container with species of fruit-flies and their food.

The experiment studies fruit-flies of two types, i.e. species first exposed to microgravity (500 flies) and offspring as species flown to space (500 flies).

Flight Equipment Used:

  • Digital camera Nikon D2X;
  • Camcorder Sony HVR-Z1J for videotaping activities of the Korean astronaut.

Experiment Results:

Exposed fruit-flies Drosophila melanogaster, as well as accompanying photo and video information to be returned to ground.
