Human Life Research on ISS Russian Segment

SLEEP Experiment


SLEEP experiment is a part of the science research activities to be performed aboard the ISS RS by Frank de Winne, ESA astronaut of Belgian nationality in the frame of the ODISSEA Project. The European Space Agency and Belgian Federal Office for Scientific, Technical and Cultural Affairs (OSTC) are customers of the preparation and implementation of the scientific program.


Objective:

Understanding of the effects of space flight on sleep and to development of effective countermeasures for both short- and long-duration space flight.

Tasks:

  • Permanent monitoring of the subject's motor activity.
  • Recording of the light in the crew location area.

Flight Hardware Used:

  • Sleep Kit with Actilight watch for automatic recording of the subject's motor activity and light exposure in the cosmonaut location area;
  • Sleep Logbook to record feelings during sleep.

Experiment Results:

Information recorded in Actilight watch (subject's motor activity and the light in the crew location area) and Sleep Logbook (feelings during sleep).
