Geophysics research on ISS Russian Segment

LSO-H Experiment

Experiment LSO-H is a part of the scientific research program to be conducted by ESA astronaut of the Dutch nationality Andre Kuipers onboard the ISS RS in the frame of DSM Delta Project, and is an extension of experiments LSO-S (SSM Cervantes Project) and LSO-B (Odissea Project). The European Space Agency is a customer of the preparation and implementation of the research program.

Objective:

Study of optical emissions in the atmosphere and ionosphere of the Earth related to thunderstorm activity and seismic processes.

Tasks:

  • Determine the spatial and spectral energy emitted by sprites, and compare it to the lighting emission intensity.
  • Make statistic on the sprites frequency and their origin.

Science Hardware Used:

LSO hardware:

  • Microcameras unit on a rotary bracket;
  • Electronics unit;
  • Cable set.

Support Equipment:

  • Experiment control unit EGE 1;
  • Power supply EGE 02;
  • Cable set.

Consumables:

  • Exchangeable hard disk.

Experiment Results:

Scientific information recorded on removable hard disks returned to the ground.
