RSC Energia: Progress MS-08 logistics vehicle launched to the ISS

February 13, 2018

Today, February 13, the cargo transportation spacecraft Progress MS-08 developed and built by RSC Energia has been successfully put into a low Earth orbit by a Soyuz-2.1a launch vehicle and is now headed towards the International Space Station (ISS).

The launch vehicle carrying the spacecraft was launched from Area 31 of the Baikonur Cosmodrome on February 13 at 11:13:33 Moscow Time. According to telemetry data, the spacecraft separated from the third stage of the launch vehicle normally at the expected time. Antenna and solar panel deployment has been reported. The spacecraft has been taken under control and has started to perform the rendezvous and docking with the ISS using the standard two-days flight profile.

The automatic docking of the cargo spacecraft with the propulsion compartment of the Zvezda Service Module is scheduled for February 15 Moscow Time. The berthing process will be monitored from onboard the station by Russian cosmonauts Alexander Misurkin and Anton Shkaplerov.

Progress MS-08 is to deliver to the ISS 1390 kg of dry cargo, 640 kg of propellant in the refueling system tanks, 420 kg of water in the Rodnik system tanks, as well as 46 kg of compressed air and oxygen in canisters. Stowed in the dry cargo compartment is scientific equipment, including a set of flight equipment for ICARUS experiment, and consumables for the life support system, as well as containers with food, clothing, medical supplies and personal hygiene items for the crew.

Cargo Transportation Spacecraft Progress MS is designed to deliver to the International Space Station dry cargo, propellant components, supplies of water and gas, to perform dynamic operations when attached to the space station using its own engines, as well as to evacuate waste and spent equipment from the station. Additional tasks of the spacecraft include conducting space experiments in free flight and flight developmental testing of onboard systems and their elements.

The new-series spacecraft Progress MS and Soyuz MS are the result of a radical upgrade of Progress M and Soyuz TMA spacecraft. The onboard command radio system Kvant-B was replaced with an integrated command and telemetry system with an additional telemetry channel. The new command radio link receives signals via relay satellites Luch-5, which significantly increased the radio coverage zone for the spacecraft – up to 70% of an orbit. The spacecraft are equipped with an advanced onboard radio system for rendezvous and docking Kurs-NA. Instead of the analog TV system Klest, the spacecraft use a digital TV system. Also included in the onboard equipment of the Soyuz MS and Progress MS series spacecraft is a new Digital Backup Loop Control Unit developed by RSC Energia, an upgraded Rate Sensor Unit BDUS-3A and a LED headlight SFOK. Thanks to the use of new ground and onboard radio systems, it became possible to use state-of-the-art data transmission protocols, which resulted in improved operational stability of spacecraft control system.

RSC Energia  is the leader in the rocket and space industry, and the prime contractor for manned space systems. The Corporation conducts work on the development of unmanned space and rocket systems (launch vehicles and orbital transfer vehicles), and high-technology systems for various non-space applications. Since August 2014, the Corporation is headed by Vladimir Solntsev.

ROSCOSMOS is a State Corporation established in August of 2015 in order to conduct a comprehensive reform of the rocket and space industry in Russia+. State Corporation Roscosmos assures implementation of the Government policies in the field of space activities and provides for them a legal and regulatory framework, as well as places orders for the development, production and delivery of space hardware and space infrastructure facilities. The functions of the State Corporation also include development of international cooperation in space, and creating conditions for using results of space activities in social and economic development of Russia.
