RSC Energia: Spacecraft Soyuz МS-05 lift off from Baikonur

July 28, 2017

Today, on July 28, at 18:41:12 Moscow time integrated space vehicle Soyuz-FG with transportation manned spacecraft Soyuz МS-05 with the crew of the next long-duration expedition was launched from Gagarin’s Launch Pad of Baikonur cosmodrome.

The spacecraft was successfully put into low Earth orbit and is headed for the International Space Station (ISS).

The spacecraft crew consists of spacecraft commander, ROSCOSMOS cosmonaut Sergey RYAZANSKY, NASA astronaut Randolph BRESNIK and ESA astronaut Paolo NESPOLI.

Onboard the International Space Station Soyuz MS-05 crew will be met by ROSCOSMOS cosmonaut Fedor YURCHIKHIN and NASA astronauts Peggy WHITSON and Jack FISHER. Therefore, the Expedition 52 (ISS-52) crew complement will be augmented from three to six crewmembers.

The spacecraft onboard systems operate normally.

According to telemetry data, the spacecraft insertion into low-Earth orbit and separation from the third stage of the launch vehicle occurred on schedule. Deployment of all antennas and solar array panels was detected immediately after the separation. The systems and assemblies of the upgraded spacecraft operate normally. The crew reports a good health status.

Spacecraft Soyuz MS-05 will approach the ISS using a short six-hour rendezvous capability. The spacecraft shall reach the station after about six hours and twenty minutes in the fifth orbit of its free flight. A fully automatic docking with the Mini Research Module (MRM1) Rassvet is scheduled for July 29 at 01:01 Moscow time.

According to the Russian science program more than 50 experiments are supposed to be performed.

Among them are EarthKam experiment consisting in a high-resolution imagery from the ISS as requested by students and schoolchildren, and Vektor-Т experiment aimed at investigation of the highly-accurate ISS motion prediction system. Its ambitious program also includes clarification of the earth's atmosphere characteristics.

On August 17 a spacewalk of Sergey RYAZANSKY and Fedor YURCHIKHIN is planned. The EVA program includes a launch of satellites, installation of science hardware, performance of microbial contamination tests outside the station. In addition, Fedor YURCHIKHIN will test a new spacesuit Orlan-ISS equipped with an automated thermal control system.

The manned transportation spacecraft Soyuz MS developed and built by RSC Energia is designed to deliver the crews of up to three and their accompanying cargos to the International Space Station (ISS), as well as to return them to Earth. When attached to the ISS, it also serves as a crew rescue vehicle and is kept permanently ready for emergency crew return to Earth.

RSC Energia is the leader in the rocket and space industry, and the prime contractor for manned space systems. The Corporation conducts work on the development of unmanned space and rocket systems (launch vehicles and orbital transfer vehicles), and high-technology systems for various non-space applications. Since August 2014, the Corporation is headed by Vladimir Lvovich SOLNTSEV.

SC ROSCOSMOS is a State Corporation that was established in August 2015 to implement a comprehensive reform of the Russian rocket-and-space industry. State Corporation ROSCOSMOS ensures the implementation of the Russian government’s space program and its legal regulation. ROSCOSMOS is also placing orders for the development, manufacture and supply of space equipment and space infrastructure objects. The State Corporation is also responsible for international space cooperation and arranging conditions for the future use of results of space activities in the social and economic development of Russia.
