DATE AND PLACE OF BIRTH:
Born on May 23, 1982 in the town of Novomoskovsk, Tula Region, Russia.

EDUCATION:
In March 2005 he graduated from the Aerospace Faculty of S. Ordzhonikidze Moscow Aviation Institute and was qualification as an engineer.

FAMILY STATUS: Married, has one daughter.

HOBBY: football, driving, reading.

WORK EXPERIENCE:
From March to October 2003 he worked as a system administrator of All-Russian Youth Aerospace Society SOYUZ and from November 2003 to April 2004 a programmer in TsNIImash.
Since September 2005 Tikhonov worked as an engineer at RSC Energia. He began to pass a Medical Examination at IBMP when he was still a student at the Moscow Aviation Institute.
At a period of undergoing general space training he was sent on a mission to Yu.A. Gagarin CTC.

On October 11, 2006 at the Interdepartmental Commission meeting for selection of cosmonauts Nikolai Tikhonov was recommended to be appointed to a post of the cosmonaut candidate of the RSC Energia Detachment.
On February 26, 2007 he began to pass a two-year course of GST.
From June 28 to July 4, 2008 in Sevastopol (the Ukraine) he participated in training to take actions in case of the descent vehicle landing on water in the preliminary crew together with Aleksandr Misurkin and Catherine Coleman (USA).
On June 2, 2009 he completed general space training with an excellent mark.
On August 10, 2009 Tikhonov was appointed to a post of the test cosmonaut of RSC Energia Detachment.
At the Interdepartmental Commission meeting for selection of cosmonauts and their appointment to the crews of the manned spacecraft and stations on April 26, 2010 he was certified as the RSC Energia Detachment cosmonaut.
In execution of the ROSCOSMOS Order to establish a single cosmonaut detachment he retired from RSC Energia. On January 22, 2011 by Order of CTC Head, Tikhonov was admitted to FGBU NII CTC Detachment to a post of the test cosmonaut.
At a period of August 12 14, 2012 at the Baikonur Cosmodrome he in the preliminary crew together with CTC instructors took part in practice of the crew actions after landing in the desert area.
On August 4, 2014 he participated in a three-week special parachute training of cosmonauts (SPTC) based on the Menzelinsky branch of the Central Aeroclub of the Republic of Tatarstan, DOSAAF of Russia.
In September 2014 Tikhonov took part in the flight training for visual-instrumental observations (VIO) of natural and anthropogenic objects of the Baikal Lake and the surrounding territories. Such trainings were provided from laboratory aircraft TU-134-LK.
From June 29 to July 3, 2015 he together with cosmonauts selected in 2010 and 2012 passed one of the phases for the space flight training, namely visual Instrumental observations (VIO).

On July 6, 2015 Tikhonov in the prime crew of the ISS 51/52 together with Aleksandr Misurkin and Marc Vande Hei began training at Yu.A. Gagarin CTC.
On August 6, 2015 his assignment to the crew of the ISS-51/52 Expedition was confirmed by NASA press release No. 15-161.
On January 25-27, 2016 Nikolai Tikhonov together with Aleksandr Misurkin and Marc Vande Hei passed training to take actions in case of the emergency landing in the wooded-marshy area in winter. For 72 hours the crew practiced operations required for survival in case of the descent vehicle emergency landing.
