Born on February 19, 1975 in Sverdlovsk (now Yekaterinburg).

FAMILY STATUS: Married, has a daughter and a son.

In 1992 he finished secondary school No.64 in Yekaterinburg.
In 1997 Sergey Prokopiev graduated from the Tambov Higher Military Pilot School specializing in Command Tactical Aviation, Air Movement Control and was qualified as a pilot-engineer.
At a period of 2002 - 2005 he studied at Michurinsk State Agrarian University specializing in Accounting, Analysis and Audit, upon completion of his study he was qualified as Economist.

Sergey Prokopiev was decorated with Military Service Order and Medals.

In 1997 - 2007 he served as Deputy Commander of the aircraft; his service was provided in such cities as Orsk, Ryazan and Vozdvizhenka.
In 2007 - 2009 he served as commander of the Tu-223 aircraft, commander of the air detachment of the 52-nd Heavy Bomber Aviation Regiment at Long-range aviation Air Base Shaikovka, Kaluga region. Combat participant.
In 2009 - 2010 he served as the aircraft commander and since 2010 - as commander of aviation group of strategic bombers Tu-160 of the 121-st Heavy Bomber Aviation Regiment at Long-range aviation Air Base Engels, Saratov region. He participated in the military parade on May 9, 2010 flying the Tu-160 over the Red Square.
Sergey Prokopiev flied the Yak-52, L-39, Tu-134UBL, Tu-223 and Tu-160 and had logged more than 850 hours (by September 2011).
At the meeting of Chief Medical Board (CMB) on September 7, 2010 he was recognized fit by health status for enlistment as the cosmonaut candidate in Yu.A. Gagarin CTC detachment during the next selection. At the meeting of the Interdepartmental Commission for Selecting Cosmonauts and their Assignment to the crews of the Manned Vehicles and Stations on October 12, 2010 Prokopiev was recommended to be appointed to a post of the test cosmonaut candidate of Yu.A. Gagarin CTC.
In accordance with Order of the Head of the Cosmonaut Training Center No. 469 of November 15, 2010 he reported to Yu.A. Gagarin Cosmonaut Training Center on January 31, 2011 and on February 1, 2011 he began to pass general space training with the group of his selection. On February 1, 2011 by Order of CTC Head Prokopiev was appointed as a candidate for test cosmonauts of CTC detachment.
On November 17, 2011 at the Chkalovsky Airdrome near Moscow he began training in zero gravity simulated onboard the IL-76 lab. Before getting a permit to flights he passed theoretical training: studied the guiding documents, familiarized with design, specifications of the IL-76 MDK and methods of performing flights with simulation of weightlessness, as well as the scope and content of exercises and tasks envisaged in the program for each flight. Ten flights with simulation of weightlessness modes were envisaged in the Program.
On March 13, 2012 he began training for extravehicular activity (EVA) in neutral buoyancy laboratory of Yu.A. Gagarin CTC, which provides training in typical operations of EVA with the Orlan-MK spacesuit modified; the suit is specially adapted to operate under water. He made 3 dives: two were aimed at getting and testing the extravehicular activity skills and the third dive was final.
Upon completion of general space training he was permitted to the State Examination; Sergey Prokopiev passed it on July 31, 2012. On August 3, 2012 at the meeting of the Interdepartmental Qualification Commission (IDQC) to assess the training of candidates for test cosmonauts (selection of 2010) he was qualified as a test cosmonaut.
At a period of August 8 - 10, 2012 at the Baikonur Cosmodrome Prokopiev in the preliminary crew together with Sergey Khomenchuk and Ivan Wagner took part in working out the practical actions of the crew after landing in the deserted area.
By Order of the Minister of Defence of the Russian Federation in Prokopiev was dismissed from the Armed Forces August 2012.
In March 2015 at the forum of journal Space News it was reported that he was assigned commander of the prime crew of the Soyuz MS-06 vehicle (the ISS-53/54 Expedition).
On June 22, 2015 by decision of the Departmental Commission Prokopiev was approved as a backup of Kazakh cosmonaut Aidyn Aimbetov in the crew of the Soyuz TMA-18 vehicle (a 10-day ISS visiting Expedition).
