DATE AND PLACE OF BIRTH: October 30, 1961 in Yonkers, New York.
Father: Ronald Garan.
Mother: Linda Lichtblau.
In 1979 he graduated from a High School in Yonkers.
In 1982 he received a Bachelor of Science B.S. (economics and production) from the SUNY College in Oneonta.
In 1994 he received a Master of Science M.S. (aeronautics) from the Aeronautical University in Arizona.
In 1996 he received a Master of Science M.S. (aerospace engineering) from the University of Florida.
FAMILY STATUS: married.
Wife: Carmel Courtney, they have three sons.
Awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, Meritorious Service Medal, Air Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Kuwait Liberation Medal, Aerial Achievement Medal, NASA Exceptional Achievement Medal.
When he has free time Garan trains children's baseball and football team and teaches at a Sunday School.
In 1984 he graduated from the Air Force Officer Training School at Lackland Air Force Base in Texas. Upon graduation from this School Garan was on trial as a pilot at the Vance Air Force Base and in 1985 he was qualified as a pilot.
He began his combat service as a fighter pilot aboard fighter F-16 in the 496-th tactical fighter squadron in West Germany.
In 1988 he was transferred to the 17-th tactical fighter squadron at the Shaw Air Force Base in South Carolina.
From 1988 to 1989 he studied at the Fighter Weapons School, USAF. Upon graduation from this School he returned to the 17-th squadron once more but as a Weapons Officer.
From August 1990 to March 1991 he participated in such operations as Desert Shield/Desert Storm as a pilot of fighter F-16.
From 1991 to 1994 he served at the Fighter Weapons School as an instructor-pilot, flight operations officer and assistant operations officer.
In 1994 he was transferred to the 39-th test and evaluation squadron at the Eglin Air Force Base, Florida where he served as F-16 chief pilot and test pilot.
From January to December 1997 he studied at the US Naval Test Pilot School at the Patuxent River Naval Air Station.
In 1998 he returned to his service in the 39-th test and evaluation squadron where Garan managed tests of the unified air-to-air/air-to-surface missiles.
He totally logged more than 5000 hours aboard 30 types of vehicles.
In 2000 he served as an operations officer in the 40-th test and evaluation squadron.
On July 26, 2000 he was selected as the astronaut candidate, the 18-th selection, NASA (for training as the shuttle pilot). Garan passed a course of general space training, after which he was qualified as the shuttle pilot and assigned to NASA Astronaut Office Station Branch.
In August 2005 he was assigned to the research crew; the crewmembers were to conduct experiments in the Aquarius Underwater Laboratory (belongs to National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration - NOAA).
On March 24, 2007 it was stated that he was assigned as a mission specialist to the shuttle crew. The shuttle flight under the program of STS-124 was preliminarily planned for February 2008.
He performed his first space flight from May 31 to June 14, 2008 as a mission specialist in the crew of the Discovery Orbiter (STS-124). The main flight task was to deliver the following to orbit: the main pressurized section (PM) as well as robotic arm JEMRMS for Kibo, the Japanese Research Module.
During the flight he performed three EVAs: on June 3, 2008 - of the duration of 6 hours 48 min, on June 6, 2008 - of the duration of 7 hours 11 min and on June 8, 2008 - of the duration of 6 hours 33 min.
The flight duration was 13 days 18 hours 13 min.
In July 2009 it was reported that Garan was assigned to the prime crew for Expedition 27 to the ISS. On October 7, 2009 his assignment was confirmed by NASA (press-release ¹ 09-233).
On September 14, 2010 at the Cosmonaut Training Center Garan together with Sergei Volkov and Oleg Kononenko passed preflight examination training on simulator TDK-7ST ¹4 (Soyuz TMA simulator). On September 15, 2010 the crew passed the examination training on the ISS Russian Segment.
On September 17, 2010 by the Interdepartmental Commission he was approved as a flight engineer of the Soyuz TMA-M backup crew. On September 21, 2010 his assignment was confirmed at the Federal Space Agency Board meeting.
During the launch of Soyuz TMA-M TV on October 8, 2010 Garan was a backup of the vehicle flight engineer.
