BIRTH DATA AND PLACE:
February 10, 1968, town of Morristown, New Jersey (State), but he believes that the town of Parsippany of the same state is his real homeland.
In 1991 he graduated from the University of Pennsylvania and got the degrees of Bachelor of Science in two subjects: Economics and Mechanics. In 1992 he got
the degree of Master of Science (mechanics) in the California Institute of Technology. In 1997 he was granted the degree of Doctor of Science in mechanics
in the same Institute.
HOBBY: scuba-diving, snowboard, skiing, rock-climing, mountaineering.
From 1992 to 1996 he worked at the Mechanics and Applied Sciences department in Pasadena, California Institute of Technology. He was engaged in studies of fluid mechanics, discovered the laws of shock cavitation waves propagation.
From 1996 to 1998 he had been with TRW Company, Space and Technology Division. He developed orientation system for Aqua spacecraft based upon thrusters.
In June 1998 he was enlisted in NASA Astronauts Corps as a mission specialist included in the 17th recruitment. In August 1998 he attended a course of general space training. Upon its completion in August 1999 he was qualified as a mission specialist and assigned to NASA Astronauts Office.
In the beginning, he was appointed at Office Robotics Branch, where he took up Shuttle telescopic manipulator. In October 2001 he was assigned to Advanced Vehicles Branch, where he was engaged in developing graphic displays and control systems to be used in new Shuttle control cabins.
In June 2003 he joined the crew consisting of 4 members (NEEMO V crew) and had spent two weeks in Aquarius underwater isolated laboratory. During January 23-25, 2006 he as a member of conventional crew together with Roman Romanenko and Mikhail Korniyenko took part in a two-day test for survival in a deserted area in case of descent module emergency landing.
The test was carried out in the forest near Moscow.
On February 13, 2007 NASA took decision to appoint him Flight Engineer of Expedition 16 (ISS-16) Prime Crew.
