RSC Energia President and Designer General N.N. Sevastiyanov
thanks the Corporation specialists who took part in the ISS off-nominal
situation recovery effort for their high level of professionalism
and dedication to work.
On June 11, 2007, during deployment and connection
of new solar array panels on the US orbital segment of the International
Space Station (ISS), some glitches occurred in the Russian Segment
(RS) on-board computers (made by ESA). As a result of this, on
July 13 the control of ISS RS on-board systems was completely
lost. It was the first time that so critical a situation arose
on-board ISS. This off-nominal situation was fraught with the
danger of loosing the space station. Our US colleagues even considered
evacuation in case the computer system wouldn’t recover.

Specialists from S.P. Korolev RSC Energia, and other companies
and organizations in the Russian space industry continue their
activities at Baikonur to prepare Progress M-61 logistics spacecraft
for its launch under the International Space Station (ISS) program.
The preparations are being conducted under the supervision of
RSC Energia President and Designer General, the technical manager
for flight tests of the manned space systems N.N. Sevastiyanov
in accordance with the schedule which calls for the launch of
the spacecraft on July 23, 2007. The list of cargoes to be delivered
by this spacecraft to ISS is being updated. A new set of onboard
computers for the Russian Segment of the space station is being
prepared for shipment.
06/18/2007 Korolev RSC Energia - MCC, Korolev, Moscow
Region.
On June 17, 2007, RSC Energia specialists and the ISS crew restored
the normal operation of two more out of six on-board computers
in the Russian Segment (RS) of the International Space Station
(ISS).
Technical measures to restore the operation of on-board computers
in the ISS RS were approved for implementation by the task force
established on June 14 of this year by RSC Energia President and
Designer General, N.N. Sevastiyanov, to analyze and remedy
the off-nominal situation caused by glitches in these computers.
At present, the 4 recovered on-board computers in the ISS RS support
all the nominal functioning modes of the segment systems. The
two additional restored computers have been tested and are now
in cold standby mode.
Preparations of the rocket space complex and the ground space
infrastructure are now under way assuming the July 23, 2007 launch
date for the Progress M-61 logistics spacecraft. This spacecraft
is to deliver a set of new on-board computers for a possible replacement
of those computers, which developed glitches.
06/16/2007 Korolev RSC Energia - MCC, Korolev, Moscow
Region.
During deployment and connection of new solar array panels on
the US orbital segment of the International Space Station (ISS),
some glitches occurred in the computers in the ISS Russian Segment.
On June 14, President and Designer General of RSC Energia, N.N. Sevastiyanov,
established a task force of Corporation’s experts. Within 48 hours
after the contingency occurred, technical measures to restore
normal computer operation were prepared and implemented.
On the night of June 16, through joint efforts of RSC Energia
experts and ISS crew, the normal operation of 4 out of 6 on-board
computers was restored. Power supply sources are connected in
a contingency configuration. The other two on-board computers
are being used by the specialists to analyze and identify the
causes of the contingency. After that, they will try to bring
on line these computers as well.
In order to completely implement the technical measures aimed
at recovering the on-board computer operation to the full extent,
it is planned to deliver to ISS some additional hardware using
the next Russian logistics spacecraft Progress M-61. For this
purpose, the task force has developed a proposal to launch the
logistics spacecraft two weeks ahead of the scheduled date (July
23, 2007).
06/15/2007 Korolev RSC Energia - MCC, Korolev, Moscow
Region.
During deployment and connection of new solar array panels on
the US orbital segment of the International Space Station (ISS),
there have been some glitches in the on-board computers on the
ISS Russian Segment (RS).
The computers were developed and supplied by European industry
under an agreement between the European Space Agency (ESA) and
Roscosmos. The computer were associated with unstable operation
of secondary power sources. One of the possible causes is electromagnetic
noise or power surges that occurred when new solar array panels
were being hooked up.
RSC Energia and NASA experts are analyzing the data. RSC Energia
has established a commission to investigate the causes of the
on-board computer glitches and to develop recovery procedures.
The on-board computer glitches do not affect in any way the everyday
life of the ISS crew.
