At the ordinary mission of the Interdepartmental Commission held on March 20, 2001 chaired by Director General of Rosaviacosmos Yu.N. Koptev a decision was adopted to conduct final operations of the final phase of the Mir Orbital Complex flight on March 23, 2001.
The procedure of these operations performance envisages implementation of three brake pulses of the velocity at a period from 3 to 9 hours a.m. by the Moscow time providing the complex de-orbiting and its bringing down in the given area of the Pacific Ocean.
A reverse day, namely March 24, 2001 is also envisaged to implement the required operations on the complex de-orbiting in case of off-nominal situation when implementing the planned actions.
The Mir Orbital Complex is serviceable, its onboard systems, including systems of the Progress M1-5 transport cargo vehicle operate in the design modes. The medium altitude of the complex orbit is 224.4 km.

The Mir Orbital Complex flight is coming to an end. Considering the significance and unique character of the most complicated operation on multi-ton Mir station deorbiting into the specified area of the World Ocean, as well as enormous interest the world community takes in this event, we start a series of publications at our website.

Extracts from speeches of Rosaviacosmos Director General Yu.N. Koptev and S.P. Korolev RSC Energia Designer General Yu.P. Semenov at the meeting with the deputies of the State Duma and journalists in MCC.

On March 6, 2001 a meeting of the Interdepartmental Commission on the final phase of the Space Station MIR operation chaired by Director General of Rosaviacosmos Yu. N. Koptev adopted proposals from S.P. Korolev RSC Energia for updating the space station de-orbiting profile in order to bring the station down in the area of the Pacific defined earlier.
The space station is to be de-orbited after March 20, 2001, which will allow, through propellant savings, to provide additional propellant reserve increasing the safety of the de-orbiting operation.
