11/07/2005. Korolev, Moscow Region.
The International Space Station (ISS) Expedition-12 crew
consisting of ISS-12 commander, NASA astronaut W. MacArthur
and ISS-12 flight engineer, Russian cosmonaut V. Tokarev
did an egress to the Station surface to perform the planned
operations on extravehicular activity.
The main tasks: mounting of external video cameras, dismantling
and removal of the external electric potential measurement
sensor at the external surface of the Station USOS.
Besides, in case of the remaining time reserve a decision
was adopted to solve a number of additional tasks.
The egress was provided through the Kvest airlock and it
was the fourth egress provided from the Station USOS.
The hatch opening occurred at 18:30, Moscow time (15:30,
Greenwich time) and was performed with a delay for 1 hour.
The delay reason was organizational-technical.
The crew had to return to the module pressurized compartment
for transfer to the electric control mode of the valve
providing the remaining air discharge from the module compartment
to the ISS space environment as in the operating procedure
for preparation for extravehicular activity there was no
instruction for obligatory control of this step execution.
Therefore, the crew who was controlled by the U.S. operational
control team of the Mission Control Center, Houston, USA,
did not provide the valve transfer to the required state
and they were not requested from the Earth in due time
to confirm the execution of this action.
Despite the delay, the crew solved all these tasks successfully
and returned to the Station having closed the airlock hatch
at 23:47, Moscow time (20:47, Greenwich time).
The total time spent to perform operations at the Station
surface was 5 hours 17 minutes.
