Georgy Grechko Passed Away

Today, April 8, 2017, at the age of 86, twice Hero of the Soviet Union, Hero of Czechoslovak Socialist Republic, pilot-cosmonaut Georgy Mikhaylovich Grechko passed away.

Georgy Grechko was born May 25, 1931 in Leningrad. In 1955 he graduated with honors from the Leningrad Institute of Mechanics, and took a job at OKB-1. In 1966 he enrolled in the cosmonaut corps. Georgy Grechko flew 3 space missions with a total duration of 134 days 20 hours 32 minutes 58 seconds and made one spacewalk lasting 1 hour 28 minutes.

January 11 through February 9, 1975, he flew as a flight engineer onboard Soyuz-17 together with Alexei Gubarev. December 10, 1977, through March 16, 1978, he flew as a flight engineer onboard Soyuz-26 spacecraft and Salyut-6 orbital station together with Yuri Romanenko. September 17-26, 1985, Georgy Grechko flew his third space mission as a flight engineer onboard Soyuz T-14 spacecraft and Salyut-7 orbital station together with commander Vldimir Vasyutin and cosmonaut researcher Alexander Volkov. This space mission, his last, Georgy Grechko flew when he was 54.
