In compliance with the International Space Station (ISS) flight program the Russian cosmonauts flight engineers, ISS-24, Fedor Yurchikhin and Mikhail Kornienko performed the planned extravehicular activity (EVA).

The objective of EVA was the following: the conduct of operations for integration of new research module Rassvet (MRM1) in the ISS Russian Segment (RS). This module was docked to the Station on May 18, 2010. One more objective was to replace TV camera accommodated in the instrument compartment of Service Module (SM) Zvezda. This TV camera failed because of the unfavourable effect of high power space radiation.

All planned EVAs were performed. A new TV camera was installed to monitor the docking operations with the ISS including European cargo vehicles ATV. On the external surface of the Station the cables were laid out and connected between Modules Rassvet and Zvezda (for connection of the onboard equipment control system of the new module) and also between module Rassvet and Functional Cargo Block Zarya (for connection of the Kurs rendezvous system in the module).

The preparation and performance of operation in open space were controlled from Mission Control Center near Moscow (MCC-M) by specialists of S.P. Korolev RSC Energia and organizations involved in the ISS program implementation.

 For reference:

  1. This space walk was the 25-th planned EVA from the ISS RS. A total of 31 EVAs were performed from the Russian Segment including 6 EVAs not stipulated in the plan.
  2. The egress hatch of the Pirs docking compartment was open at 08:11 Moscow time and closed - at 14:54 Moscow time. The cosmonauts stayed in open space for 6 hr 43 min.
  3. The following ISS-24 crew performed activities onboard the ISS during the EVA of the Russian cosmonauts: Russian cosmonaut, crew commander Alexander Skvortsov and U.S. astronauts, flight engineers Tracy Caldwell Dyson, Shannon Walker, Douglas Wheelock.
